being a conservationist or environmentally minded person isn’t all about giving away your hard earned cash (although that really helps).
I want to give you tangible and free (or cheap) ways to start helping conservation issues that you and i are passionate about today. Money is a great start, but saving the planet is a lifestyle choice and its the long term behaviours that are going to make the difference.
basics
diet.
It’s hard to ignore the science that tells us overconsumption of meat damages the environment. I’m by no means telling you the only way forward is for the world to become vegan, but I do believe that in the UK, USA and Australia especially we could stand to all eat a little less meat. Did you know it takes 600 gallons of water to make just one hamburger? I am personally reducing my meat intake, but even having a vegetarian week is a good place to start.
Below you can find some helpful resources for environmental cooking!
plastic.
We all know about the damage plastic can do to the environment. Blue Planet II did a great job of bringing this issue into mainstream conversation, yet it doesn’t seem to have made it into the minds of everyone if we look at the state the beaches have been left in since lockdown lifted!
Reducing plastic use can be as easy as buying a bag for life, choosing a brand of fruit or veg that’s sold loose or finding a shop that sells in a ‘no waste’ format.
talk about it.
Shockingly, not everyone knows about conservation initiatives. The great thing is that in todays world, everyone has a voice.
If you’re reading up on an issue you’re interested in, documenting and talking about your thoughts, feeling and progress around that issue can help others to learn about things they might not have come across before. You don’t have to work as a conservationist to be a conservationist, in my eyes.
Even if you’re a London based finance worker, chatting to people about free ways in which they can shift their behaviour to make the planet a better place is just as important as working on the conservation front line.
We can’t do this alone.
other resources.
zero waste.
We live in a society where packaging surrounds everything. By becoming a more conscious consumer, you can help to reduce your own personal impact on the planet, and probably save some money along the way!
learning resources.
Kids are the future. Might be cliche, but it’s true. Your children will inherit the planet that you leave behind, so as well as learning to look after it yourself, it’s great fun to bring them along on the journey and learn together. This even helps with pandemic home-schooling (trust me)!
food.
Changing your diet is perhaps the most controversial and difficult lifestyle change when it comes to helping the environment. It takes a lot of effort, and nobody is perfect. I still eat meat, but vegetarian food is starting to make more and more appearances on my menu.
